I would like to share some of my thoughts about the "Rejection is Hard" article. I myself have experienced mixed success with Ivy League applications, as well as college applications in general. I have also never had a semester with a 4.0.
So here we go.
One big thing that the writer left out during the interview was the types of extracurriculars Rachel was involved in. Given that the number of college applicants has been breaking record numbers every year, it is pretty clear that there needs to be a way for the colleges to distinguish applicant #2 from applicant #2567. Some people think that what distinguishes each applicant is the "personal statement" or essay, whichever way you want to put it. That's partially true
