The Commissioner’s trophy is the prized possession of any baseball club, and is conferred to a team following a World Series victory.

As a baseball enthusiast, I shouldn’t care who wins this World Series. Sadly, our home team’s been knocked out; but on the plus side, at least our rival team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been knocked out too. With the Cubs and the Indians in the Fall Classic, it seems like we Californians like us like us don’t have an obvious team to support. But on the contrary, we should take a side. It’s not because of the superstitions surrounding the Cubs with the Billy Goat curse placed by Billy Sianis or the 1993 yearbook where a student predicted a Cubs 2016 victory in his senior quote. Nor is it because of the hype built up by big names like Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo. I do want the Cubs to win, though, and here’s why:

1The Cubs knocked out the LA Dodgers. And any team that knocks out the Dodgers and any team that can contribute to the Giants’ “BEAT LA” movement is a friend of mine. The Cubs helped the Dodgers continue their “Choke”-tober tradition, and that’s reason enough to be on their side.

2I don’t want Cleveland getting in over their heads with all these championships. The Cavaliers played a heck of a Finals series (though I am slightly bitter that the Warriors blew the lead). But, the city of Cleveland has historically been pretty bad at sports over the last few decades, and it doesn’t seem right for them to hit the record books with not one, but two championships. The Indians have been playing good baseball, but Cleveland’s championship situation needs moderation (let’s face it, the Browns aren’t winning anything any time soon).

3Four years ago, the Cubs were the laughing stock of the National League. In the 2012 season, they won 61 of their 162 games, which rounds to a .377 win percentage. That being said, they’ve come a long way. In four years, 101 losses turned to 103 victories. And that kind of Cinderella story deserves recognition. Both of these teams have made huge strides since 2012, but 103 wins is a big deal.

4After going through the Pirates in the 2015 Wild Card Game and the Cardinals in the NLDS, the Cubs were swept by the Mets in the NLCS. The Cubs finished with the third best record in the majors last season, but never even held the lead during any of the NLCS games. A team like the Cubs at least deserved to have a shot at making the World Series. If last year wasn’t their year, this year should be.

5The Cubs have been waiting forever for this. It’s been 108 years since the Cubs won a championship.

1908 was the last time the Chicago Cubs won a World Series championship. The Cubs have since endured a 108 year championship drought, marking the longest championship drought in MLB history.

For context, Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency was coming to close, the Ford Model T car had hit the assembly lines and America was six years away from World War I. That’s not to say Cleveland has it much better, with their own 68 year championship drought. But last time I checked, 108 was greater than 68.
