Life Skills: De-stressing with yoga positions

Life Skills: De-stressing with yoga positions

Stress that comes from both schoolwork and after school activities quickly builds up, and as finals approach within the next month, relaxation time is key. Secretary and treasurer of Yoga club, senior Nina Rice, demonstrates yoga poses and explains how they can help with stress relief.

Ragdoll

“[It] kind of goes along with child’s pose. You’re just stretching your back out and letting gravity relieve you.”

Child’s Pose

“I find it so stress relieving because you’re just curled up in a ball and you feel really comfortable. It helps elongate your spine which, at least for me, just sitting at desks all day and slouching over and doing my homework, it hurts my back. So [Child’s Pose] really helps relieve a lot of tension in my back and makes me feel better when I have to go sit down for the next five hours and go do homework.”

Lotus Position

“If you sit down with your legs crossed in lotus position and meditate for a few minutes, that’s extremely beneficial with reducing stress because it gives you a chance to just clear your mind for a few minutes which is pretty rare in the MVHS lifestyle.”

Corpse Pose

“It doesn’t really seem like much, but you can get so relaxed by clearing your mind and just relaxing every muscle in your body for a few minutes. That’s the most stress relieving one in my opinion.”

Yoga Club meets most Mondays at lunch in the dance room and provides yoga mats for participants.
