Girls Water Polo wins against HHS in the team’s first home game

MVHS played its first home game against HHS on Sept 21. The team secured six goals within the first two quarters, and then scored two more in the last two quarters. A main contributor the team’s performance was the team’s strong defense. The defense not only blocked key HHS players from shooting, but were also quick to identify key players, and shut them out of the game.

“I’m really proud of our defense in general.” sophomore Olivia Lassa said. “We only let [HHS] get one goal. We were all getting into our positions, and we just beat them down the pool every time.”

The team also demonstrated its ability to communicate efficiently as a contributor to its success. Communication was an important characteristic that the team felt resulted from a better connection between the players on the team.

“We were awesome in communication.” senior Hanna Severietti said, “We just looked down the pool and saw if someone was open and passed to them. Seeing this, it was just really awesome.”

Varsity co-coach Gigi Swan was also pleased with the team’s defense and communication, an improvement, she thinks, from the the team’s recent game against SCHS

“The team worked together really well, and they communicated well.” Swan said, “We had a little bit of an issue getting the ball to the open man on Tuesday when we played [SCHS], but it seemed to be working out better today, with girl’s getting open and getting the ball. It’s nice to see them improving.”

Despite the team’s win, Swan believes that the team still needs to recognize certain opportunities ,such as man-ups and ejections from the other team.

“The issue was when we get man-up when or the other team has an ejection there are certain things that we’re going to work on, and that’s what we weren’t going to do.” Swan said.  “We really need to kind of figure that out for our next game because it’s really important too score when we do have an advantage like that.”

With a win against HHS, and improvements in defense and communication, the team feels ready and confident to continue its season strong.

Girls Water polo has their second home game on Sept 29 @ 3:30pm

Correction: The term “injection” was correctly changed to “ejection” on Sept 30
