Mat Shack is usually run by parents of MVHS students who are on athletic teams. Ujwala Mahajan (left) has been volunteering for several months now, but Amanda Hockley (right) has been volunteering for over 4 years. They are both parents of MVHS students and alumni and are extremely involved in the school’s activities

“We just like to support the school and the athletic teams,” Hockley said.

Students can go purchase merchandise from the Mat Shack anytime between 12:25 to 1:10 p.m. at lunch on Fridays. However, you can also make orders online by emailing [email protected] with the details of the product you would like. You can even arrange to have the products delivered to you locally.

Every cent of the proceeds go directly to MV Athletic Boosters in order to fund sports programs at MVHS. Any sport that asks for additional funding from MVAB will get some of the profits made at the Mat Shack. Money has been recently appropriated for replacement soccer goals, new water polo helmets and an outdoor canopy for the cross country team. The merchandise also includes spirit wear that students can wear around MVHS or at sports games in order to increase school awareness and spirit.

Last year, the Mat Shack was a room on the upstairs level of the student center. Now, the Mat Shack is just opposite from the school cafeteria and under the stairs to the new F building. The volunteers decided to move the Mat Shack  to reach out to students who may have not known that the Mat Shack existed previously.

“The new location gives us more exposure,” Ujwala said. “This is a better location because more students know we are here.”

5. The Mat Shack doesn’t just sell clothes.

Many students have the perception that the Mat Shack just sells clothing items, but it actually carries a broad range of items including license plates, phone cases, lanyards, mugs, tote bags, hats, stickers, and even stadium seats. In addition, varsity letter jackets can be ordered directly through the Mat Shack.

6. The Mat Shack sells shirts for $5.

That’s right. Many items at the Mat Shack are on clearance. There are extra large gray athletic shirts on sale for $5, some hoodies have been marked down to only $25, and long sleeve white shirts are on sale for only $10.

7. All merchandise is ordered from Logo Locker.

Logo Locker is a nationwide company that company that specializes in promotional products and apparel. It supplies spirit wear and products to schools and corporations across the country.

8. There is new merchandise every year

Although the Mat Shack has clothes that date back several years, there is a plethora of new styles every year to signify the new sports seasons. Bold new colors can be found on shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets every year.

9. The Mat Shack’s revenue is extremely variable

Some days, volunteers rack in over $1000 but on other, only $15. At the start of the year, the Mat Shack volunteers attend football games and make a lot of revenue there. However, later in the year, profits are usually a lot lower.

10. The Mat Shack was operated by students until a few years ago

As far as the volunteers know, the Mat Shack has been in business for at least 12 years. Several years ago, students took part in a program where they would run the Mat Shack like a proper store, selling school supplies, snacks, clothing, and other items.

The Mat Shack also has a website at matshack.weebly.com. They have additional information such as prices and sizes on all the products they sell. They also include detailed information about how the profits are used by MVAB. And be sure to check out the Mat Shack every Friday at lunch near the cafeteria!
