Five fashion predictions for the Academy Awards

Keep an eye out for mythical themes, dramatic reds and a hint of springtime on the red carpet.

Forget J-Law, DiCaprio and all your other Oscars sweethearts for just a moment; at least, forget why they were nominated. A-list stardom isn’t all you should look out for in the Dolby Theater — tonight’s dresses and tuxes are equally important, as fashion makes its pronounced entrance during this evening of glamour at the 86th Academy Awards. Here are five likely looks based off of this past year’s styles to be donned by your favorite stars:

1. Glamour goddesses and POP queens
… Meaning divine golden-white palettes and show-sweeping bright colors. Pay attention to the godly theme as diamonds, jewels and sheer materials may appear throughout the night.

2. Going mythical

After their success at last year’s Academy Awards, mermaid dresses and Grecian drapings are making a comeback in 2014. Expect torso hugging yet swishy below-knee looks — dubbed the “mermaid” — and elegant, sleek drapings of Greek chitons and Roman drapes.

3. Timeless accents and streamlined jackets
Not everyone wears gowns at the Oscars! Menswear may not hit the presses, but classic clean collars (Hi, Bradley Cooper!) and double-breasted blazers (as popularized this spring in Europe) may hit the streets.

4. Spring is in the air
… Because seasonal trends always pay off. As seen during New York Fashion Week, edgy shoulders, chic crops plus prominent necklines are in, so watch for some of these crisp combinations.

5. And of course, (not so) classic reds
… Actually, count on explosive, wow-ing entrances. The tinges of scarlet and mesmerizing silhouettes of last season are too firey to forget, so keep your eyes peeled for some incendiary numbers.

Watch the 86th Academy Awards today, March 2, from 5:30 p.m. PST/8:30 p.m. EST on ABC.
