WiLD 94.9 welcomes students back to school

The large van and the black tent are the first indicators of their presence on campus. The second is the blaring music. On Jan. 3, the DJs from WiLD 94.9 visited MVHS to welcome students back with their usual upbeat music. In addition to the live DJs, the radio station also held a raffle in which students entered their names in order to win T-shirts. The DJs came for free to visit as a part of Back in Action Week, which was planned and coordinated by ASB Leadership’s Student Life Commission.

DJ Alex DeNaughty has been a DJ for one and a half years and is currently a producer of 94.9’s Up All Night show. She played mixes from 94.9 for the majority of the time and enjoyed interacting with the students who came to the booth.

“[We’re here] to entertain you guys!” DeNaughty said. “You guys have obviously come back from break, after fall semester with a lot of tests, so we came to lighten the mood a little bit.”

Back in Action week was established in the past by Student Life to help ease students back into school following the break. From Jan. 3 to Jan. 6, there will be various themes for each day across the week. Jan. 4 is Relax Day, where students can receive free massages from professional masseuses. Do it Yourself Day on Jan. 5 includes cookie decorating and henna tattoos. On Jan. 6 is Carnival Day, which includes free cotton candy and a variety of carnival games. In addition to the lunchtime activities, there will be a guest speaker during Friday’s assembly.

“The whole purpose of Back in Action Week is to get us back in action the right way. We just got back from break and a lot of us are really groggy, and everyone is regretting coming to school,” Student Life commissioner junior Sanjeev Ranga said. “It’s just something for every day of this week to be like ‘oh, school’s fun!’”

According to Ranga, the four commissioners are each assigned a day of the week to take charge of. The commission began brainstorming events before mid-year break, then purchased supplies over the holiday break. Though MVHS had a similar event held the previous year, Ranga, who had participated in Back to Action Week as a freshman and a sophomore, is particularly enthusiastic for this year’s events.

“I can’t tell you who it is, but we have a really big speaker on Friday. He’s actually a celebrity; he’s really well-known,” Ranga said.

Ranga has high expectations in terms of student reception towards Back to Action Week. Even DeNaughty, having only been at MVHS to perform for less than an hour, greatly enjoyed the experience.

“I had fun, I definitely had fun,” DeNaughty said. “I like to make people happy and have a good time, if they’re going to have a good time then I’m going to have fun doing it.”
