Environmental commission to hold e-waste drive

Environmental commission to hold e-waste drive

recycleCommunity Leadership hopes to reduce harmful disposal of electronics

Community Leadership’s Environmental Commission will host its fourth annual electronic waste drive on March 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It plans to collect a variety of old and non-functioning electronic equipment from computers to microwaves. The event will be held at the MVHS bus circle, and the organizers hope to spread awareness about the harm that electronic waste can have on the environment.

“We hope that, through this event, we can help people realize just how important it is to recycle electronics,” commissioner junior Benjamin Hung said.

Electronic waste remains a huge environmental concern in the U.S., especially in the Silicon Valley area. Approximately 30 million computers are discarded every year, and about three tons of electronic waste were produced in 2010. With activities like e-waste drives, Community Leadership strive to involve MVHS in the movement against environmental harm.

Environmental Commission is currently promoting the e-waste drive on School Loop and on announcements. The organizers hope to raise $1,000 from the waste collected, which will be donated to local environmental recycling company, Green Mouse Recycling.
