Student Recognition commission branches out with competition

Calling all artists and poets—break out the pen and paper because MVHS needs your romanticism.

ASB Leadership’s Student Recognition commission initiated “Art from the Heart,” a competition for artists and poets to design cards for Variations’ Singing Valentines. The competition is part of the commission’s initiative to reach out to a wider audience.

“We were thinking about what types of groups we could target over the summer, and we thought that artists don’t get to show their art,” commissioner sophomore Emily Wong said. “There was nothing in the [Singing Valentines], which is all fine and good, but the card would be more special if they could write something in it.”

The submissions themselves would either be poems, under 14 lines long, or artwork that could fit on an 8 ½” by 5″ sheet of paper. Each person can submit as many entries as he or she would like. Submissions are due Jan. 31 by 3 p.m. in the office, after which Variations will screen submissions and pick the poem or design they liked the best. Although the prize hasn’t been decided, according to Wong it will be some kind of gift card.

In addition, Student Recognition is planning a Galleria, which will be open to all art submissions, ranging from photography to sculpture. To reach out to more people other than artists, the commission will host the annual car show in the near future.
