2014 officer elections moved to second week of school

2014 officer elections moved to second week of school

Freshmen start campaigning for class officer position one week later than last year

Candidates for office of the class of 2014 began campaigning on Aug. 31. Unlike last year, however, elections for the freshmen class officers have been moved to the second week of school.

The ASB officers reached the decision based on feedback they received from students and staff. Freshmen who campaigned last year, along with other students and staff, told them that holding elections the first week of school didn’t let them adjust to their new surroundings. Since the Welcome Back Rally was moved from the traditional first Friday to Sept. 4, freshmen would be able to adjust to the new campus and go through the class officer elections in time to lead their class in the rally.

Due to these changes, the ASB officers expected that more people would have a chance to run—a goal met by the increased attendance at this year’s informational meeting.

“They’d understand what they were getting into instead of being thrown into [elections] during Matador Retreat,” ASB president Daniel Ki said.

In the campaign forum on Aug. 31, candidates talked about why they should be elected as a class officer and online voting opened later that day. The results were released on Sept. 2 and the new class officers began their year by leading their class in the Welcome Back Rally with the help of the Link Crew.
