Key Club and YouTube stars AJ Rafael and Jenny Suk fundraise for Haiti

Cupertino is a small city. Finding a celebrity among only 50,000 people on the streets may be hard, but that doesn’t mean the famous never make special appearances. YouTube celebrities AJ Rafael and Jenny Suk will be coming to MVHS on Feb. 13 to perform at Key Club’s benefit concert for Haiti. YouTube star singers AJ Rafael and Jenny Suk will be performing together at MVHS on Feb. 13 in the auditorium. Class of 2008 alumna Jenny Suk, still keeps in touch with her 2009 alumna cheer-mate and former Key Club President Jessica Hsu, who helped Key Club contact Suk. Because Suk and Rafael are dating, Key Club managed to invite both of them to the benefit concert. AJ Rafael’s YouTube Channel has more than three million views and more than 100,000 subscribers. He has also released a single, "I Just Want You", on iTunes.

"[Key Club’s] goal this [past] week has been to raise a lot of money for Haiti," Key Club Vice President senior Joyce Zheng said. "AJ Rafael is really well known on YouTube, and we had a connection to him."

With Rafael and Suk’s appearance, Key Club is able to combine both the fun and serious aspects of the club. According to Key Club Vice President junior Daniel Ryu, many students see Key Club as a social club rather than a service club. Beside fundraising for Haiti, the concert will also allow students to understand that while Key Club does have social events, it serves its community.

The two-hour concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. With 422 seats and over 200 confirmed guests on the benefit concert’s Facebook event page, Key Club is hopeful, yet fearful, of the night’s turn out.

"We’re afraid that people [will] want to come but they can’t because [the auditorium] might be full," Key Club Bulletin Editor sophomore Amy Kahng said. "We’re also letting other people outside of MVHS come, so we’ll probably sell out."

75 percent of the proceeds will go to help Haiti, and the other 25 percent will pay Rafael and Suk. The concert will not only benefit Haiti, but also Key Club. Everyone will gain something from the concert, even the audience, who will get to meet YouTube singer-songwriters AJ Rafael and Jenny Suk.

Tickets will be sold during lunch starting Feb. 8 for $15 or $17 at the door.
